In 1979 William Kettler Jr., from Alvin Texas, created a seasoning to use on his brisket while BBQing. Over the years, family and friends started using his seasoning, not only to BBQ, but to season different types of food. William Kettler III (Bubba) started mixing this seasoning in larger batches. It soon became affectionately known as "Bubba Rub".
William Kettler Jr. always wore his hat crooked and people knew him by that crooked hat and firm handshake. Crooked Hat Seasoning was created by William & Linda Kettler's children, to sell Bubba Rub, to help fund a memorial account that supply scholarships in memory of their parents.
